Cost Overruns Halt UW Construction

From Staff And Wire Reports

The University of Washington is canceling the second phase of its biggest campus construction project because of cost overruns.

The engineering and computer science construction project has seen more than 650 design changes. Mold has also been discovered in the rooftop air-handling units for the 180,000-square-foot building.

The university feared it would run over the $98.6 million budget.

The project was designed to hold the electrical engineering and computer science and engineering departments. Already completed were physics-astronomy and chemistry buildings.

The second phase included renovating and adding a new section to the old electrical engineering building.

Ellis-Don Construction of Mercer Island and the university must still negotiate who is responsible for the costs that halted the second phase.
