Alderdorf Leads Nic Women To Meet Crown

College track and field

North Idaho College’s women, led by double winner Aimee Alderdorf, placed first at the seven-team Mount Hood Relays Saturday in Gresham, Ore.

Alderdorf won the shot put (41 feet, 2-1/2 inches) and discus (130-6) for the Cardinals, who scored 98 points to edge the host Saints by eight.

NIC also picked up wins in the 6,400-meter relay, 3,200 relay and distance medley. NIC’s Amber Sielaff won the hammer with a throw of 135-1.

The Cardinals men were fifth of eight teams, with 44 points. NIC’s Derek Woodske won the hammer at 168-6.

Community College of Spokane finished third in the men’s meet, with 88 points. Mount Hood scored 112.5 in winning.

CCS winners were Beau Chandler, javelin, 192-8, and Tryllane Poole, discus, 150-3-1/2.

Wins by Heather Sylvester in the javelin (117-1) and Lasina Smith in the long jump (19-9) guided the CCS women to 66 points and fourth place.

The University of Idaho’s Frank Bruder qualified for the NCAA championships in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase by running a school-record 8:40.69 at the Oregon Invitational at Eugene.

Bruder beat his standard of 8:41.22, although he lost the race to Wisconsin’s Pascal Dollert. The Vandals’ Montrell Williams (10.51), Niels Kruller (10.58) and Jason St. Hill (10.59) swept the 100.

Idaho’s Felix Kamangirira ran the 400 in a season-best 46.30, making him an NCAA provisional qualifier.

The Vandals’ Steve Bluhm won the discus (161-0).

Idaho’s women were led by Jill Wimer’s first in the javelin (150-9) and second in the discus (a season-best 146-9).

Ed Turner won both dashes and the men’s long jump, and Aretha Hill threw a school-record 196-7 to win the discus and lead the University of Washington to dualmeet wins over Washington State at the AT&T Great American meet in Seattle.

Washington’s men won by scoring 103, four more than the Cougars. The women scored 100.5 to better WSU by 20.

WSU sophomore Ian Waltz of Post Falls won the shot put and discus, improving his NCAA provisional mark in the discus with a 191-6.

WSU’s Tamika Brown, Sharika Higgins and Attrina Higgins went 1-2-3 in both women’s dashes for the second straight week.

Bernard Lagat won the 1,500 and 5,000, and Tyson Allen took both hurdles for the Cougars.

Led by Anna Church, WSU’s women placed 1-4 in the javelin.

Linfield’s men and women won Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges quad meets at Whitworth.

Nate Miller won the 800 (1:57.7) and 1,500 (4:04.5) to guide the Wildcats men to 91 points, 25 more than the host Pirates. Linfield piled up points in the 5,000, high jump, hammer throw and pole vault.

In the women’s meet, triple winner Jennifer Boyman (35-6-1/2 in the shot put, 139-7 in the discus, 150-6-1/2 in the hammer) guided Linfield to 94 points.
