Leavenworth Celebrates With Maifest

May Day’s coming right up and one of the best places to celebrate spring (although it won’t be on the actual May Day) is in Leavenworth, Wash.

For 26 years the Bavarian-like village in the Cascades has thrown a huge Maifest with music, dancing, food, a grand march down Front St., a Saturday night dance and plenty of space to stroll in the spring sunshine.

Leavenworth’s Maifest runs May 9-11. For a schedule of events call the Chamber of Commerce, (509) 548-5807 or e-mail info@leavenworth.org. The schedule is also on the Web at www.leavenworth.org.

The Space Needle will be celebrating “35 Years Together” during six months of activities beginning April 21 and ending Oct. 21.

The activities, which coincide with the opening and closing dates of the 1962 World’s Fair, range from fireworks, memorabilia exhibits and an outdoor film festival to the introduction of a new Space Needle mascot.

A particularly helpful new booklet is aimed at mature travelers, but it’s loaded with advice for anyone who travels.

“99 Travel Tips” is divided into sections - before you go and the actual journey. Tips range from negating jet lag to how to stay fit and healthy on a vacation.

It’s free and is available by calling (800) 784-0935.

Another travel booklet hot off the presses is the Flathead Valley Vacation Travel Guide.

The booklet includes info on day trips and activities, dining, lodging and shopping and a calendar of events for the Montana’s Flathead Valley.

The free guide is available from the Flathead Valley Convention & Visitor Bureau: (800) 543-3105.

The spring and summer calendar of events for Snohomish County is now available. The activities range from festivals to markets to performances. Snohomish county includes Everett, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mukilteo, Mountlake Terrace, Marysville, Arlington, Lake Stevens, Monroe, Gold Bar and Index.

For a free copy of the calendar: (888) 338-0976.

Tea, anyone?

The Seattle Asian Art Museum offers lectures and musical performances along with highquality art exhibits. But what really interested us are the teas in the Kado TeaGarden, served Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sundays noon to 4:30 p.m. and the first Thursday of every month, 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

A selection of more than 45 teas is available, along with light lunches and sweets.

The museum is at 1400 E. Prospect and regular museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and Thursdays until 9 p.m. Admission is $6, $4 for seniors and students; tea and lunch is extra.

On the food front

Sun Mountain Lodge has hired chef Jeff James as the Chef de Cuisine at the Methow Valley lodge.

James was most recently chef at the Freestone Inn in Mazama, Wash., and has been favorably reviewed in Travel & Leisure, Sunset, Northwest Palate and Seattle Magazine.
