UW Men, Women Sprint Past Cougars In Duals

Ed Turner won both dashes and the men’s long jump, and Aretha Hill threw a school-record 196 feet, 7 inches in the discus as the University of Washington took dual-meet wins over Washington State at Saturday’s AT&T Great American meet in Seattle.

Washington’s men won by scoring 103, four more than the Cougars. The women scored 100.5 to better WSU by 20.

WSU sophomore Ian Waltz won the shot put and discus, improving his NCAA provisional mark in the discus with a 191-6.

WSU’s Tamika Brown, Sharika Higgins and Attrina Higgins went 1-2-3 in both women’s dashes for the second straight week.

Bernard Lagat won the 1,500 and 5,000, and Tyson Allen took both hurdles for the Cougars.

Led by Anna Church, WSU’s women placed 1-4 in the javelin.

Eastern Washington University’s Seville Broussard won the women’s high jump (5-8) and finished second in the 100 hurdles with a school-record 14.06 seconds at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene.

Also for EWU, Taneka Sauls finished third in the women’s long jump with a school-record 18-6.

Jason Baerlocher of Clarkston ran the third-fastest 1,500 in Eastern Washington University history (3:49.08) during the development session.

Mike Dwyer of the Eagles was second in the men’s 110 high hurdles at 14.67.

Also at the meet, the University of Idaho’s Frank Bruder qualified for the NCAA championships in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase by running a school-record 8:40.69.

Bruder beat his standard of 8:41.22, although he lost the race to Wisconsin’s Pascal Dollert.

Linfield’s men and women won Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges quad meets at Whitworth.

Nate Miller won the 800 (1:57.7) and 1,500 (4:04.5) to guide the Wildcats men to 91 points, 25 more than the host Pirates. Linfield piled up points in the 5,000, high jump, hammer throw and pole vault.

Whitworth swept the men’s hurdles, with Aaron Posey winning the 110 (16.36) and Eric Swanson the 400 (56.2). Also for Whitworth, Ben Vaday won the 100 (11.31) and 200 (22.94), and Braden Thomas won the long jump (21-4-1/4) and triple jump (43-5-3/4).

In the women’s meet, triple winner Jennifer Boyman (35-6-1/2 in the shot put, 139-7 in the discus, 150-6-1/2 in the hammer) guided Linfield to 94 points.

For Whitworth, Trina Gumm picked up seven points in the shot put, discus and javelin, and Star Olson was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

Community College of Spokane scored 88 to finish third among eight men’s teams at the Mount Hood Relays in Gresham, Ore.

The host Saints won with 112.5 points

CCS winners were Beau Chandler, javelin, 192-8, and Tryllane Poole, discus, 150-3-1/2.

Wins by Heather Sylvester in the javelin (117-1) and Lasina Smith in the long jump (19-9) guided the Sasquatch women to 66 points and a fourth-place finish.

North Idaho College topped the seventeam field with 98 points.
