Homer Beats Bulldogs

Brian Mazone’s three-run, fifth-inning homer led University of San Diego to a 6-4 victory over Gonzaga Sunday in the final game of a West Coast Conference baseball series at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

Mazone’s blast cleared the bases not long after Jay Parks opened the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Kevin Reese.

San Diego’s victory allowed the Toreros (19-15-2, 7-5) to win the four-game series 3-1. Gonzaga’s record fell to 14-19-1 with a 3-9 conference mark.

Gonzaga picked up seven hits, three of them by third baseman Jason Uberuaga.

Lewis-Clark State College (30-5-1) saw its winning streak reach 20 games by defeating Hawaii-Hilo 9-8 at Lewiston.

Gonzaga University’s men took seventh place in the West Coast Conference Championships at Malibu, Calif., and the women placed seventh at San Diego.

The GU men beat University of San Francisco 5-1. The women downed USF 8-1.

In men’s play, the Bulldogs collected all of their victories in singles to finish the season with a 15-13 record. No doubles matches were played. The women wound up 10-13.
