Three Local Students Named To All-State Academic Team

Three Inland Northwest students representing Community Colleges of Spokane were named to the USA Today’s All-Washington Academic Team. They are among 62 students selected by Phi Theta Kappa, the National Scholastic Honor Society for Community Colleges, to be honored in Olympia.

The students, their majors and schools are:

Laurance Tomsie, pre-medicine/ biochemistry, Spokane Community College, is a member of the SCC Computer Club and Phi Theta Kappa.

Ronald Wheeler, an SCC fluid power technology student and a certified fluid power specialist, is president of SCC’s Associated Student Council and the Washington State Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Wheeler is also a member of SCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter.

Britta Hulbert, majoring in gerontology/social services at Spokane Falls Community College, is president of SFCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter. Hulbert is a certified Washington State long-term care ombudsman, and has received special recognition for her volunteer work at Loganhurst Care Center and Hillyard Senior Center.

Students qualify for membership in the honor society by maintaining a grade-point average of 3.6 or better for 30 consecutive credit hours.

Megan McChesney of Spokane, received a $1,000 Western Foundation Merit Scholarship at Western Washington University, where she is a junior pre-medical major. She maintains a 3.92 grade point average.

Michael Ebel, son of Michael and Ellie Ebel, has been promoted to 1st Class Petty officer, United States Coast Guard. Ebel achieved the second-highest score nationwide, on the E6 promotional exam. He is a 1989 graduate of University High School.

Peter Perkins was recently selected Advisor of the Year by the Washington Journalism Education Association at the WJEA Journalism Conference last month.

Perkins is the yearbook advisor at Rogers High School where his staff has won numerous national awards for scholastic publications. They received the prestigious Gold Crown award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, for the 1995 edition of their yearbook, the Treasure Chest.

Eastern Washington Subcontractors and Suppliers Association has awarded Bo Engstrom Scholarships to seniors Erica Frampton, West Valley High School; Jodi Somerday, Mead High School; and Zachary Klaja, Lewis and Clark High School.

The awards were presented at the association’s general membership meeting, April 9.

Marine Lance Cpl. Mark Donnelly, son of Laura Ferguson, Spokane, received a Letter of Recognition while assigned with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Donnelly was recognized for superior performance of duty, consistently performing his demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. He is a 1994 graduate of West Valley High School.

Marine Pfc. Peter McBride, son of William McBride of Nine Mile Falls, was recently promoted to his present rank. McBride reported for duty with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

McBride is a 1996 graduate of Lakeside High School.

Three Inland Northwest students attending Indiana University in Bloomquist were included on the Founders Day Honors List for academic excellence.

The students and their hometowns are:

Elizabeth Gibbs of Cheney; Allison Altenkirch of Pullman and Archie Chen of Spokane.
