Michelle Carrara Newport Year: Senior Sport: Track And Field Events: Throws

There really is only one thing left for Michelle Carrara to do - and it isn’t running a leg on a state-qualifying relay team.

The Newport senior qualified for the State A girls track meet in the discus as a freshman, added the shot put as a sophomore and the javelin as a junior. She would like to return in all three, but now it’s time to win one and place in all three.

She hopes that would come in the discus, her favorite event and the one in which she was second a year ago.

Currently, she leads the area in all three of her events at 117-feet, 8 inches in discus, 113-8 in javelin and 35-5-1/2 in shot put. Last week, she won the first two events in the Ritzville Invitational and took second in the shot.

“I was pretty happy with it,” she said, “but I probably could have done better.”

Of course, considering the Grizzlies, like everyone else, spent most of the spring practicing inside, she’s in pretty good position.

“She’s throwing well, but she’s not where she wants to be,” Newport coach Linda Haptonstall said. “She wants to pick up where she left off.”

As the first to arrive for practice and the last to leave, there’s little reason to think she can’t top last year’s bests.

“It will come around eventually,” she said. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
