Travel To Exotic Locations With ‘Incredible Journeys’

Martie Zad The Washington Post

Eleven journeys filmed to transport the armchair adventurer to remarkable places full of cultural, historic and romantic themes comprise “Incredible Journeys,” a three-volume set from Reader’s Digest Video & Television.

The three-hour collection of exotic travel reaches into places the viewer might never visit but finds, by watching through the eyes and lives of the characters in their cultural settings, a distinct treat, thanks to awe-inspiring photography.

“From Venice to the Nile” is the title of the first volume. Its three features are a trip on the Orient Express from Paris to Venice with a row down a Venice canal; an exploration of the marvels of Pompeii, seen by strolling its cobblestone streets with a top archaeologist; and a sail down the Nile on a felucca, a vessel that the pharaohs of Cleopatra’s time would recognize.

“The Outback to Shangri-La,” the second volume, takes the viewer over the rugged, dry and wild landscape of Australia’s outback; deep into the jungles of Borneo; on a Li River ferry-boat ride through China’s most beautiful valleys and countryside in Guangxi Province; a walk in the streets of old Katmandu; and a visit with rows of Tibetan monks and a journey with a yak caravan to the Thyangboche Monastery in the shadow of Mount Everest.

“From the Amazon to the Arctic” is the title of the third volume, which includes a dog-sled ride through the Alaskan wilderness; a horseback ride with cowboys and Ute Indians to explore the cliff ruins left by the Anasazi Indians hundreds of years ago; a Caribbean sail on a 19th-century, square-rigged brigantine; and a canoe trip on the Amazon and black waters of the Zabalo River.

The “Incredible Journeys” set lists at $59.96 and can be ordered at 1-888-738-4336.
