Broncos Saddle Gu With 2 Losses

Mike Frank pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the opener and went 4 for 6 on the day to guide Santa Clara to a 4-1, 14-5 sweep of Gonzaga in West Coast Conference baseball Saturday at Santa Clara, Calif.

Santa Clara (23-16, 12-3) has won seven straight to pull within 1-1/2 games of first-place Pepperdine. Gonzaga is 15-23-1, 3-12.

Frank struck out 11 and launched Santa Clara’s two-run first with an RBI single. Frank scored on Paul Chiaffredo’s double.

Brian Canny’s RBI double in the second ended the Zags’ scoring. Chiaffredo hit a two-run homer, his eighth, in the third off GU starter Matt Kearney.

The Broncos powered to a 5-0 lead in the second game. Frank’s two-run triple to right-center led a three-run first. Chiaffredo added an RBI double in the fourth.

Kevin Okimoto went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Todd Hughes hit his first collegiate homer. Santa Clara’s Vince Boyanich scattered four hits and struck out eight in seven innings.

Crossover Tourney in Yakima

Tracy Moore threw four shutout innings, and went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs as Community Colleges of Spokane blasted host Yakima Valley 23-0 in the second of three games at the tourney.

Peggy Palmer of CCS added a 2-for-2 effort, with three RBIs and three runs.

In its first game, CCS lost to Mount Hood Community College 10-8 on Shannon Lindsey’s two-run triple in the sixth. Shannon Zahrowski’s two-run triple in the fifth for the Sasquatch had tied the game. Stephanie Shelton of CCS went 3 for 5 with four RBIs.

The third game was played late.

California Championships

Gonzaga’s men and women both placed second to California in varsity eight races near Sacramento.

GU’s varsity women finished the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 4.7 seconds. Cal won in 7:00.7.

Cal won the men’s varsity race in 5:55.34. The Zags finished in 6:10.6.

GU will compete today in the West Coast Conference championships.
