Cardinals Hammer Ricks, 12-2

Sean Bosch kept the baseball in the infield and North Idaho College’s hitters kept the ball in the outfield Saturday.

Bosch pitched a five-hitter, coaxing 17 ground balls, and every NIC starter had a hit during a 12-2 Region 18 victory over Ricks at Rexburg, Idaho.

Bosch struck out four and walked three as the Cardinals improved to 12-13.

Chris Pendall and Andy Larson homered for NIC. Larson and Jason Bay had four hits apiece. Larson, with seven hits in the series, improved his batting average to .253.

Mike Frank pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the opener and went 4 for 6 on the day to guide the Broncos (23-16, 12-3) to a West Coast Conference sweep of the visiting Bulldogs (15-23-1, 3-12).

Frank struck out 11 and launched Santa Clara’s two-run first with an RBI single. Frank scored on Paul Chiaffredo’s double.

The Broncos powered to a 5-0 lead in the second game. Frank’s two-run triple to right-center led a three-run first. Chiaffredo added an RBI double in the fourth.

The Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges doubleheader has been moved to 4 this afternoon in The Dalles, Ore. Sunday’s originally scheduled single game was moved to noon Monday at Pacific’s field in Forest Grove, Ore.

Crossover Tourney in Yakima

Tracy Moore threw four shutout innings, and went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs as Community Colleges of Spokane blasted host Yakima Valley 23-0 in the second of three games at the tourney.

Peggy Palmer of CCS added a 2-for-2 effort, with three RBIs and three runs.

In its first game, CCS lost to Mount Hood Community College 10-8 on Shannon Lindsey’s two-run triple in the sixth. Shannon Zahrowski’s two-run triple in the fifth for the Sasquatch had tied the game. Stephanie Shelton of CCS went 3 for 5 with four RBIs.

The third game was played late.

California Championships

Gonzaga’s men and women both placed second to California in varsity eight races near Sacramento.

GU’s varsity women finished the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 4.7 seconds. Cal won in 7:00.7.

Cal won the men’s varsity race in 5:55.34. The Zags finished in 6:10.6.

GU will compete today in the West Coast Conference championships.
