Reflecting pools, empty chairs and a peaceful meadow - they were among the images of timeless remembrance submitted in the design competition for a memorial to the Oklahoma City bombing victims and survivors.

The memorial moved a step closer to reality Saturday with the unveiling of the finalists in the competition.

“We will never do as well as a flower on a fence,” said one of the finalists, James Rossant, referring to a chain-link fence around the site of the former federal building.

The winner will be picked July 3.
