Jays’ Clemens Adds To Streak

Associated Press

American League

Roger Clemens, making his first start in 10 days, pitched two-hit ball over seven innings as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 6-0 Saturday night at the Ballpark at Arlington.

Clemens (3-0) extended his shutout streak to 19 innings and didn’t allow a hit until Dean Palmer’s one-out single in the fourth. He struck out four and walked four, improving to 8-6 against Texas.

Indians 11, Brewers 6

Cleveland

Manny Ramirez was 4 for 5 with a towering home run and Charles Nagy gave Cleveland a quality start.

The game was extremely costly for the Brewers, who lost second baseman Fernando Vina to a fractured left leg.

Vina, batting .321 and coming off a big game Friday, jammed his left foot into the base while stealing second in the first inning. The Brewers said Vina will have surgery, perhaps as soon as Monday, and miss two months.

Yankees 3, White Sox 2

Chicago

Tino Martinez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and New York overcame its first five-error game since 1989 to beat Chicago.

Mariano Rivera, who had blown three of his first six save opportunities, got the final four outs for his fourth save.

Royals 7, Angels 3

Kansas City, Mo.

Mike Macfarlane broke out of an 0-for-17 slump with a three-run homer and Kevin Appier pitched a five-hitter to lead Kansas City over Anaheim.

Macfarlane got his first hit of the season during a five-run second inning against Mark Langston (1-2).

Athletics 7, Tigers 1

Detroit

Mark McGwire hit his fifth homer and Willie Adams won on the road for the first time in eight career starts as Oakland beat Detroit, sending the Tigers to their fourth consecutive loss.

Boston

The teams were rained out for the second straight day. No makeup date was announced.

McDowell’s role reduced

Former A.L. Cy Young Award winner Jack McDowell, who has a 12.51 ERA and has not pitched well since coming off the disabled list last season, has been sent to the Indians’ bullpen to work out his problems.

McDowell, who has yet to make a relief appearance in his eight-year big league career, will stay in the bullpen indefinitely, manager Mike Hargrove said.

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” a dejected McDowell told reporters.

Clearing the bases

The Tigers placed catcher Matt Walbeck on the 15-day disabled list and recalled catcher Raul Casanova from Triple-A Toledo. Walbeck is expected to miss at least two months after breaking a bone in the base of his right thumb. Walbeck broke a bone in his right wrist at the start of last year with Minnesota. … Will Clark started at DH for Texas, his first start of the season, and went 1 for 3 with a walk. Clark had been on the disabled list with a fractured middle finger… . Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry, on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore left knee, was expected to play five innings Monday with the Class A Tampa team.
