Ag Students Honored At National Conference

Nine Spokane Community College agricultural technology students were honored at the National Postsecondary Agricultural Student Conference and Competition last month.

Students receiving first-place awards were: Dana McCollim and Todd Iverson. Second-place recipients were Wes Suksdorf, Lori Somerlott and Jerry Kane. Receiving third-place awards were Erin Elliott, Pat Kane and Justin Weideman. John Tillison was elected vice president of the national agricultural technology organization for students.

Michael Wilson has had two poems accepted for publication by The National Library of Poetry.

Wilson’s poems, “Oh! What a World” and “Beast of Nature,” appear in the anthology “Whispers at Dusk.”

Two Spokane students attending Washington State University have been awarded WSU scholarships.

Scott Davis, son of Frank and Shelley Davis, received a $1,571 Richard C. Brown III Memorial Scholarship.

Davis, a senior majoring in pre-dentistry, is president of the Sigma Nu fraternity, and a member of the University Honors Program and three national honor societies.

Michael Semmen, son of Linda Semmen and a 1992 graduate of University High School, received a $400 David and Louise Scott Scholarship.

Semmen, a senior studying architecture, is chapter president of the American Institute of Architecture Students and a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.

Marine Lane Cpl. Steve Green, son of Ron and Vickye Green, Nine Mile Falls, was meritoriously promoted to his present rank while serving with the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan.

Green, a 1993 graduate of Lakeside High School, joined the Marine Corps in January.

Kyle Desautel received the Clydie Kohn Rossman Scholarship at the state conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Spokane last month.

He is the son of William and Patricia Desautel, Coulee Dam.
