Cda’s Ross Keys Sweep Of Lewiston

Scott Ross couldn’t ever remember beating Lewiston.

The Coeur d’Alene High catcher, who pitches out of necessity, has actually been the Vikings’ most steady starting pitcher this spring. He handcuffed the perennially powerful Lewiston Bengals to complete a rare Vikings sweep in an Inland Empire League doubleheader Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene rallied in the seventh inning for a 4-3 win in the opener before Ross shut out the Bengals 6-0 in the nightcap.

“I don’t want to leave the ballpark,” Ross told his teammates as they raked the mound and base paths. “I just want to stay here.”

Ross (3-1) had plenty of reason to bask in the victory. He scattered two hits, struck out four and walked just one.

“They’ve (the Bengals) owned me,” Ross smiled. “Usually I can pitch to ‘em once through the order, but by the second time through they’re getting me. Today I just focused on changing things up and locating my pitches down and out of their power points. And the defense played well.”

All the Viks were focused Tuesday.

The sweep vaulted CdA (11-4 over-all, 7-2 league) into first place and pushed Lewiston (8-7, 5-3) from first to third after Lake City (9-6, 6-3) swept a doubleheader at Sandpoint (4-7, 0-7) by 13-5 and 11-7 margins.

While first-year Vik coach Brian Holgate was pleased with the sweep - which avenged a Lewiston sweep earlier - he kept the victories in perspective.

“That comes when you win, but it’s not a big thing right now,” Holgate said. “We’d like to be there after (regionals).”

In the opener, Lewiston jumped on CdA’s first-game starter, Mark Scates, for three runs in the third inning. Two walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases for the Bengals.

A passed ball allowed Lewiston’s first run, then a bases-loaded ground-out plated the second before an error scored what would prove to be the Bengals’ last run.

CdA chipped away, scoring two runs in the fourth on a two-out single by Ross.

In the seventh, Ross and Bret Whiteman each reached base on errors. Following a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Jim Rupp, Lewiston intentionally walked pinch-hitter Andy Gore to put on the force at any base.

Nick Rook walked to force in the tying run. After a strikeout Ben Johnston, who is the Viks’ Mr. Clutch, laced a game-winning single.

In the second game, CdA took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Rook and Joe Wagner opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Kirk Gosch extended the lead to 3-0 in the next inning with a homer. The Viks added three more runs in the sixth, two coming on a double by Gosch.

Lewiston has struggled lately at the plate, but Bengals coach Tom Grunenfelder isn’t too concerned.

“We’ve played four games against them and they’ve basically been four games alike,” Grunenfelder said. “There hasn’t been a lot of offense, but there’s been good pitching and good defense. There’s no reason to push the panic button. But we need to find some offense.”
