Radicals Accused Of Deadly Attack

Compiled From Wire Services

Algeria’s authoritarian government said Tuesday that Islamic radicals had hacked to death 93 people, 43 of them women and girls, in an overnight raid on a village near Algiers.

Such a toll would make the massacre one of the deadliest incidents in five years of violent struggle in the former French colony. The war began in 1992 after the government canceled an election that a coalition of Muslim parties seemed certain to win.

There was no immediate independent verification of the details of the attack.
