Let Wall Become Picture Mat

The Orange County Register

Do we like little surprises around the house, or what?

The surprises we have in mind have to do with imagination, ingenuity - in some cases using items in an unusual way that spins their definition in an entirely different direction.

Exhibit A? The picture frame. For a different approach hang the frame nude. That’s right. Just the bare frame. No glass. Then, inside the frame, hang an object affixed to the wall with glue, a nail, whatever’s appropriate. Perhaps a beautifully painted tile, a collectible doll, a woven textile. The wall becomes the matting. In many cases, instead of a flat piece, you’ll be adding an eye-catching third dimension.

Now, about ottomans. Use one as a coffee table. Here’s how: Balance an attractive tray atop the ottoman to hold drinks, a small vase of flowers, a family photo in a handsome frame. When you want extra seating or a place to plop your tootsies, simply remove the tray and reposition the ottoman.

The simple, under-appreciated wood stool gets kicked around more than junior’s football. Consider these surprising options: stool as plant stand; stool as side table; stool as art pedestal.
