NHL playoffs

Esa Tikkanen, who had the game-winning goal in overtime in Game 3, scored at 12:08 of overtime Friday night as the New York Rangers beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 to eliminate the defending Eastern Conference champions, four games to one in the best-of-seven series.

The Panthers’ season ended in overtime for the second straight year. They lost to Colorado in Game 4 of the 1996 Stanley Cup finals.

Mark Messier scored his first two goals of the playoffs and assisted on the overtime goal. He centered the puck to Tikkanen, who skated to the point, eluded defenseman Terry Carkner and fired the winner.

Messier, who led the Rangers with 36 goals during the regular season, has 108 career playoff goals, second behind teammate Wayne Gretzky’s 116.

Dallas

Ryan Smyth’s 25-foot slap shot from the left circle found its way through Andy Moog’s pads and into the net 22 seconds into the second overtime as Edmonton took a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference series.

Oilers goaltender Curtis Joseph stopped 43 shots for his second shutout of the series. Moog had 28 saves. Both were brilliant in the first overtime.

Jason Arnott got the puck to Smyth after the faceoff and Smyth skated untouched over the blueline and took the shot from a tough angle. The puck got past Moog for the winner.

Red Wings 5, Blues 2

Detroit

Steve Yzerman scored on a fluke goal early in the game, a blast from center ice, and Detroit never trailed in taking a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference series.

The five goals matched Detroit’s entire output against Blues goalie Grant Fuhr in the first four games. The Red Wings, whose 42-year drought without a Stanley Cup championship is the NHL’s longest, threw all their offensive might at Fuhr early in the game.
