U-Hi Does It The Hard Way To Overcome Saxons 12-11

University provided the most eye-opening rally of the Greater Spokane League baseball season Friday, and in doing so handed Mead first place.

The Titans committed three errors in the top of the seventh to allow visiting Ferris to score four runs for an 11-5 lead. After the first U-Hi batter in the seventh struck out, the Titans rallied for seven runs and a 12-11 win.

Ferris (6-3) fell into second, one game behind Mead and one ahead of U-Hi (5-4) and Central Valley.

David Powell hit a three-run homer for U-Hi with one out in the seventh. After another out, the Titans used singles and walks to set up Aaron Fryer’s game-winning two-run single off Derek Fountain.

Ferris beat U-Hi 10-0 earlier.

The Panthers (7-2) took over undisputed first by breaking a 3-all tie in the fifth with six consecutive hits off Zach Yarbrough of the visiting Bullpups (3-6).

During the telling rally, Jason Kostelecky, Seth Winterer and Grant Reeves doubled, and Adam Strate, Sam Hess and winning pitcher Rob Elmer singled.

Elmer allowed two earned runs, scattering seven singles and doubles by Kevin O’Connell and Sean Thacker.

Mead avenged a 14-13 loss to G-Prep.

Adam Boots, in the fifth, and Ben Miller, in the sixth, had two-out RBI doubles to lift the Bears (5-4) over the visiting Indians (4-5), who fell out of a three-way tie for third.

CV reliever Nate Bartlett entered with a man on second and nobody out in the seventh, the Bears ahead 10-8. The runner Bartlett inherited scored, and NC’s Jared Starr was on first with two outs when Bartlett’s pickoff attempt bounced away. Starr was thrown out attempting to take third.

CV’s Joe Paventy had a two-run homer in the second. Justin Williams of the Indians hit a two-run shot in the fourth.

Eric Hayden struck out eight, walked two and homered to lead the Highlanders (4-5) over the visiting Tigers (3-6) to complete a season sweep.

Shadle jumped ahead of three teams and tied NC for fifth.

Kyle Heuett doubled twice and had three RBIs, and Nick Bender two RBIs for Shadle. Kurtis Broderson of LC doubled, homered and had five RBIs.
