Point Guard Picks Nic; Wofford Takes A.D. Job
Point guard Nathaniel Bailey, who led Odessa (Texas) College’s basketball team in scoring and assists last season, said he intends to transfer to North Idaho College next season.
Bailey, who signed with Virginia Tech coming out of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn., will be reunited with Brad Fields, a former high school teammate, who also has signed at NIC.
“I saw (NIC) play at nationals and I feel I can fit right in,” Bailey said. “A lot of schools are recruiting me, wanting me to sit out a year, but I’m going to play JC another season.”
Bailey likely will inherit the point guard position from Todd Myles, who appears to be leaning toward honoring his commitment to Mississippi State, NIC coach Hugh Watson said. Myles had been considering returning to NIC.
Odessa (24-10) went 0-2 at the NJCAA Tournament. Bailey scored 36 points in the two games.
Harrison to Iona
NIC’s Chris Harrison has orally committed to play men’s basketball at Iona University in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Harrison, a 6-foot-4 forward from Houston, averaged 7.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and made 36.4 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Wofford leaving BF
Former longtime Bonners Ferry High football coach Tom Wofford has been hired as athletic director and vice principal at Salmon in southeast Idaho beginning in the fall.
Salmon is one of the smaller A-2 schools in the state, about 100 fewer students than Bonners Ferry.
Wofford, 46, served as head football coach in two stints over 11 years. He was forced to resign two years ago to devote his time fully to vice principal duties.
Wofford, who started teaching at Bonners Ferry in 1975, leaves a troubled district. Last week, the community passed a maintenance/ operations levy for the upcoming school year.
“But it’s just a Band-aid,” Wofford said. “I just decided that with some personnel dealings the past two years that I was going to go elsewhere. I didn’t like the administrative assignments for the upcoming year.”
Longtime administrator and current high school principal Dan Meeker had been reassigned as junior high principal. Meeker, a former girls head basketball coach at Bonners Ferry, has since asked to be reassigned as a teacher.
Wofford is a Silver Valley native. He graduated from Mullan High in 1969.
“I’m going to really miss the kids,” Wofford said. “I was starting to see kids of parents I had taught coming through so it’s going to be tough to leave.”
Wofford also served as head track coach for several years.
Moaney commits
North Idaho College wrestler Jason Moaney has orally committed to Clarion (Penn.) University.
Moaney, a two-time NJCAA national champion, visited the Eastern Wrestling League school three weeks ago. Others interested in Moaney were Iowa State, Old Dominion and Virginia.
