Down Goes Chang

Compiled From Wire Services

Top-seeded and defending champion Michael Chang fell victim to the slashing lefty style of Brazilian Fernando Meligeni in the first round of the $328,000 AT&T Challenge.

The crowd-pleasing Meligeni, retrieving like mad and nailing big forehand winners, upended Chang in a two hour thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Andre Agassi posted a quick 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jamie Oncins, also of Brazil.

In an afternoon upset, qualifier Steve Campbell ousted third-seeded Jim Courier 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
