Williams Fills In During Belle Time

This used to be Albert Belle’s time at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field - two on, two out, tie game in the late innings.

On Tuesday night, the moment belonged to Matt Williams.

Williams, Cleveland’s new cleanup hitter, hit a three-run homer to snap a seventh-inning tie and lead the Indians to a 10-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Williams’ seventh homer of the season and sixth in four games landed in the left-field bleachers, where Belle’s homers used to go.

Brewers 2, Tigers 1 Detroit

Jeff Cirillo hit a tie-breaking RBI single and Milwaukee’s bullpen converted its first save opportunity in more than two weeks as the Brewers edged Detroit.

The win was the fourth straight after six consecutive losses for the Brewers.

Royals 6, Jays 5 (10) Kansas City, Mo.

Chili Davis hit his 300th career home run leading off the bottom of the 10th inning, giving Kansas City its victory over Toronto.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 Chicago

Albert Belle’s sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning lifted Chicago.

Angels 5, Red Sox 4 Boston

Garrett Anderson singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as Anaheim blew three leads before beating Boston.

Orioles 6, Twins 4 Minneapolis

Brady Anderson’s two-run triple keyed a four-run sixth inning that sent Baltimore to its victory over Minnesota.

Clearing the bases

Tony Phillips of the Chicago White Sox was suspended for two days by American League president Gene Budig for actions leading to his ejection by umpire John Shulock from an April 21 game. … The Kansas City Royals activated second baseman Jose Offerman for Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cleveland Indians manager Mike Hargrove still does not have a contract extension, and he’s still not happy about it.

“Yeah, it puts me in a really bad mood when I hear things like that,” Hargrove said of speculation this could be his last year in Cleveland. “I want to stay here. I’m not looking to go anywhere else.

Jack McDowell, demoted to the Cleveland bullpen after three bad starts, will return to the starting rotation Thursday following two scoreless appearances as a reliever. … Baltimore’s Eric Davis, the A.L. Player of the Week, was scratched just before the game and returned to his hotel room with a fever.

Kansas City first baseman Jeff King was throw out stealing in the bottom of the second, ending his consecutive stolen base string at 14. … Tuesday marked the 11th anniversary of Roger Clemens’ major-league record 20-strikeout performance for Boston against Seattle. He matched that last Sept. 18 at Detroit.
