Area Golfers After Spot In U.S. Amateur Field

Seven Inland Northwest golfers will be among the 99 players competing for four places in the U.S. Amateur Championship today at Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.

Spokane’s Sean Clements, Corey Prugh, Darren Slackman, Tim Waggoner, Chad Gaffaney and Pete Caruso will join Zack Knorr of Moscow, Idaho, in the 36-hole qualifier conducted by the Washington State Golf Association.

Entry was limited to golfers with a USGA Handicap Index of 3.4 strokes or less.

The U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 18-24 at Cog Hill Golf Club outside Chicago.

Triathlon

Matt Seeley and Kelle Vigeland were the individual winners Sunday in the 17th annual Spokane Troika triathlon.

Seeley, 26, breezed to victory in the overall men’s race, covering the swim in Medical Lake, the 38-mile bike ride and the 10-mile run in 2 hours, 50 minutes, 7 seconds. Vigeland, 16, won the women’s division even more easily with a time of 3:24.23.

Randy Beckner reigns as the master’s men’s champion with a 3:08.44 clocking. Heidi Smith topped the master’s women in 3:41.14.

Officiating

The Inland Empire Football Officials Association’s first fall meeting will be held at7 p.m. tonight at 514 S. Elm St. in Spokane.

The association, which supplies officials for 32 high schools, 33 junior high or middle schools, Spokane Youth Football and parochial school football, reports that it urgently needs new officials. Interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting.
