Windmill Can Add Touch Of Old World Charm

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Like a bed of bright tulips or a gently splashing fountain, a decorative Dutch windmill like this one can add a touch of Old World charm to the most modern of lawns and gardens. Not only will it lend a little eye-catching motion to the yard, but it may even help keep the birds out of the garden. And all it takes to put it together are a few common tools and some inexpensive materials.

Standing nine feet tall from the bottom to the tip of the uppermost blade and five feet wide at the base, this do-it-yourself windmill project is so authentic that it includes details like doors, windows and guard rails. The rotating blades are mounted on a lazy-susan bearing and spin even in a light summertime breeze, and a removable door in the rear allows access to a small storage compartment in the windmill’s interior.

Although the project takes some time to finish, it was designed for ease of construction. It uses redwood, exterior-grade fir plywood and pine, and calls for all straight cuts. After cutting out the the pieces, simply assemble according to step-by-step instructions, sand and paint.

The Large Windmill plan, No. 739, is $8.95 and includes step-by-step directions with 33 photos, diagrams and a shopping list and cutting schedule.

A package of three windmill plans, No. C95, is $18.95 and includes this windmill, plus a small Dutch windmill and a farm-style windmill. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery (for rush delivery, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum and allow about one week).
