Gender Equity Official Gets Award From Ccs

Jan Polek, gender equity program manager for the Institute for Extended Learning, received the Community Colleges of Spokane’s Gary Deccio Memorial Equity Award.

The award is given for demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and respect for others in personal and professional life; a commitment to fostering an appreciation for diversity and the strengths it brings to the community colleges; and a commitment to the mission of the colleges.

Polek has been responsible for creating programs to encourage women to enter non-traditional fields to become self-sufficient. She also chairs the community colleges’ Equity Council and has made presentations regarding sexual harassment.

Blake McKinley Jr. received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Endodontics from Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He earned his DDS degree from Creighton University in 1995.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Blake McKinley, Spokane.

Lauren Niemeier Hoernlein is an exchange student in Japan this summer. Hoernlein, an incoming senior at Ferris High School, is a recipient of the Japan-America Friendship Scholars Program administered by Youth For Understanding International Exchange.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Rebecca Myers, a 1979 graduate of Colfax (Wash.) High School, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving as an administrative officer with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit at the University of Idaho.

Myers was cited for superb initiative and contribution in helping the command fulfill its mission.

Marine Sgt. John Randolph was recognized while serving with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit at the University of Idaho.

Randolph was cited for superior performance of duty as a midshipman working towards an undergraduate degree.

He is the son of Don and Jeanne Randolph, Spokane.

Ian Turpin, Spokane, was named to the Dean’s List at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond for the spring semester.

Shannon McKinney was named to the Dean’s List at Ripon (Wis.) College, where she is a junior majoring in chemistry and biology.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McKinney of Medical Lake.

Jerremy Hunley, a spring graduate of Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls, won a Graduating High School Senior Academic Scholarship from the Public School Employees of Washington.

He plans to attend University of Washington’s business program.
