Thompson Loses Finale

Jenny Thompson left the Pan Pacific swimming championships with five gold medals - good, but one shy of her record harvest in 1993.

China’s world-record holder, Le Jingyi, frustrated Thompson’s last-day bid when she beat the American by 18-hundredths of a second in the 50-meter freestyle. It was Thompson’s only loss.

The 24-year-old from Stanford, Calif., has won 18 gold medals in the meet since 1989 to go with her five Olympic golds.

The American swimmers finished this four-day meet with 19 golds from 36 races.
