Charlotte Overwhelms Sacramento

Andrea Stinson scored 16 points and Vicky Bullett added 14 Thursday night to lead the Charlotte Sting to a 68-51 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs at Charlotte, N.C.

Rhonda Mapp had 12 points for Charlotte (12-10), which won for the ninth time at home. Bullett and Mapp each had nine rebounds.

Ruthie Bolton-Holifield scored 13 points to lead Sacramento (9-15), while Pam McGee and Latasha Byears each had 10. Byears had 11 rebounds.

The Sting shot 56 percent from the field (15 of 27) and held the Monarchs to 10-of-27 shooting (37 percent) to take a 35-23 halftime lead.

The Monarchs cut the lead to 40-34 on a jumper by Bolton-Holifield with 15:24 left, but the Sting went on a 9-2 run over the next 5 minutes to open a 13-point lead.

The Monarchs made one more run, pulling within 53-46 on two free throws by McGee with 3:49 to go. The teams traded baskets over the next minute and a half and the Sting led only 58-51 with 2:11 left.

But Andrea Congreaves hit a 3-pointer, Nicole Levcesque made two free throws and Stinson made two foul shots and a layup over the final 1:38 to put the game out of reach.

The Sting, who finished shooting 45 percent (27 for 60), finished with a 42-24 rebound advantage over the Monarchs, who shot 38 percent for the game (21 for 56).

Jennifer Gillom scored six of her game-high 19 points during a late run as Phoenix defeated Cleveland.

Cleveland (12-12) took only 44 shots from the field and only three from 3-point range, both season lows for a Mercury opponent.
