Finley Wins His 10th Straight

Chuck Finley won his career-best 10th consecutive start and the visiting Anaheim Angels, helped by Rickey Henderson’s heads-up baserunning, defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Friday night.

Finley (13-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two in remaining unbeaten since June 27.

Henderson, acquired from San Diego for three players on Wednesday, walked three times and singled. He scored two runs and stole a base.

Athletics 11, White Sox 6 Chicago

Matt Stairs hit a three-run homer and Jason Giambi added a solo shot for Oakland.

Stairs homered in a five-run fifth and Giambi homered in the seventh, both connecting for the second consecutive game.

Mark Bellhorn hit a pair of RBI doubles for Oakland, which has won three straight games and seven of nine.

Red Sox 5, Twins 4 (10) Boston

Reggie Jefferson singled home the winning run in the 10th and Boston sent Minnesota to its seventh consecutive loss.

The Twins rallied in the ninth, scoring twice to tie it at 4. But Minnesota wasted a leadoff triple by Denny Hocking in the 10th, and lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

Yankees 5, Rangers 2 New York

Dwight Gooden rebounded from his worst start of the season with six solid innings and Bernie Williams drove in two runs.

Tino Martinez had three hits as the Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games. Gooden (6-4) allowed two runs and four hits, striking out five and walking three, going to full counts on six batters.

Indians 5, Jays 4 (10) Cleveland

Matt Williams, who had a home run taken away when it was called foul in the sixth inning, had a game-winning single in the 10th.

After the Blue Jays tied it with two unearned runs off Jose Mesa in the ninth, Omar Vizquel atoned for a costly error by hustling out a leadoff double in the 10th off Tim Crabtree (2-3).

Royals 5, Tigers 3 Detroit

Bip Roberts hit a two-run single as Kansas City scored four unearned runs in the second inning.

Jermaine Dye homered for the second straight day as the Royals won for just the fourth time in 10 games.

Damion Easley homered for the Tigers, who have lost three straight and five of six.

Clearing the bases

The Yankees activated outfielder Darryl Strawberry from the 15-day disabled list. Infielder Luis Sojo was put on the DL with a broken bone in his left forearm, outfielder Mark Whiten was designated for assignment, while DH Pete Incaviglia was given his unconditional release. … Toronto outfielder Orlando Merced is out for the season after arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. … Royals’ Jay Bell had played 35 consecutive errorless games at shortstop before a grounder went through his legs in the seventh. … Boston’s Nomar Garciaparra extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a hit in the 10th, but teammate Jeff Frye’s string ended at 15.
