Associated Press

American League

B.J. Surhoff drove in six runs, half of them with a bases-loaded double in a seven-run sixth inning that rallied the Baltimore Orioles past the visiting Anaheim Angels 10-9 Saturday night.

The Orioles overcame four Anaheim homers and a 7-1 deficit to win for the 14th time in 19 games. All the runs in Baltimore’s biggest inning of the year came with two outs.

Surhoff went 3 for 5, and the six RBIs tied a career high.

Jim Edmonds, Darin Erstad, Tim Salmon and Todd Greene accounted for Anaheim’s season-high four homers.

Rangers 8, Yanks 5 (10) New York

Reliever John Wetteland hit an RBI double in his first at-bat in more than three years and picked up a win against his former team as Texas beat New York.

Wetteland doubled off Ramiro Mendoza (4-5) in the 10th inning after pinch-hitter Domingo Cedeno’s RBI single had given the Rangers a 6-5 lead.

Royals 2, Tigers 1 Detroit

Kevin Appier won for the first time in nine starts since June 27 as Kansas City defeated Detroit.

Johnny Damon homered and Bip Roberts hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth.

Red Sox 12, Twins 4 Boston

Nomar Garciaparra extended his hitting streak to 19 games, one short of the team’s rookie record set by Fred Lynn in 1975, and Boston sent Minnesota to its eighth consecutive loss.

Indians 8, Blue Jays 4 Cleveland

Matt Williams and Marquis Grissom each homered during a six-run seventh inning, sending Cleveland past Toronto.

Brewers 6, Athletics 5 Milwaukee

Dave Nilsson, hitting just .222 against left-handers, singled off left-hander Mike Mohler (1-9) with two outs in the ninth to drive in the winning run for Milwaukee.

Phillips in limbo

The Walt Disney Co. braced for a confrontation with the Major League Players Association after refusing to allow outfielder Tony Phillips to return to the Angels lineup after doctors cleared him to do so.

Phillips, charged with felony cocaine possession, rejoined the Angels in Baltimore on Saturday after examination by doctors representing the union and major-league owners. After manager Terry Collins met with him and explained the Angels would not permit him to play, Phillips left the stadium.

Clearing the bases

The Yankees, needing a backup middle infielder, acquired Rey Sanchez from the Chicago Cubs for minorleague pitcher Frisco Parotte… . The Angels activated outfielder Jim Edmonds from the 15-day disabled list and sent left-hander Greg Cadaret to the minor leagues… . Baltimore placed right-hander Shawn Boskie on the 15-day disabled list.
