Angels Fall Again To Orioles’ Rally

Lenny Webster singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday as the Baltimore Orioles once again rallied to beat the Anaheim Angels, 5-4.

Aaron Ledesma hit his first major-league home run and Rafael Palmeiro had his 25th of the season for the Orioles, who moved a season-high 33 games over .500 with their 15th win in 20 games.

Baltimore has won seven straight extra-inning games.

Tim Salmon had three hits and an RBI and Rickey Henderson drove in two runs for Anaheim, which lost leads of 3-1 and 4-3 less than 24 hours after blowing a six-run cushion in a 10-9 loss. The Angels trail Seattle by one game in the A.L. West

Cleveland

Roger Clemens struck out 11 in his 19th victory as Toronto snapped Cleveland’s four-game winning streak.

Clemens (19-4), who leads the majors in wins and is second in ERA, moved one victory away from his fourth 20-win season and first since 1990 as he bids for his fourth Cy Young Award.

It was Clemens’ third straight double-digit strikeout game, 11th this season and 79th of his career. His ERA went from 1.66 to 1.78, still tops in the A.L. but second in the majors to Montreal’s Pedro Martinez (1.70).

New York

After David Cone removed himself in the second inning with a tight right shoulder, Ramiro Mendoza pitched six innings of two-hit relief to lead New York over Texas.

Mendoza (5-5), the loser in Saturday’s game, combined with Kenny Rogers on a three-hitter. Rogers, who left his last start on Aug. 10 after three innings with a tight upper back, struck out five in the final two innings.

Boston

Nomar Garciaparra extended his hitting streak to 20, tying Fred Lynn’s team rookie record as Boston sent Minnesota to its ninth consecutive loss.

Brewers 5, Athletics 2

Milwaukee

Following a 3-hour, 49-minute rain delay at the start, Jose Valentin hit a solo homer and Julio Franco doubled in a run to lead Milwaukee.

Doug Jones pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 26 tries.

Tigers 8, Royals 4

Detroit

Travis Fryman drove in four runs and Damion Easley drove in three as Detroit stopped a four-game losing streak.

Greg Keagle (1-2) won for the first time in nine career starts, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings.

Clearing the bases

Baltimore’s Cal Ripken, playing in his 2,500th major-league game, had a first-inning double to give him 922 extra-base hits, lifting him past Goose Goslin into sole possession of 33rd place on the career list. … With all his milestones, Toronto’s Roger Clemens earned his first victory at Jacobs Field, where he came in 0-2 with a 7.01 ERA. … Detroit’s Bobby Higginson had hits in his first three at-bats, giving him hits in seven straight plate appearances, the longest streak of the season by a Tiger.

Hank Aaron, Lew Burdette, Red Schoendienst, Frank Torre, Johnny Logan and other members of the Milwaukee Braves 1957 world championship team were honored during pregame ceremonies for the 40th anniversary of their title. … A crowd of 42,002 raised the Yankees season attendance to 2,038,371, the 16th time in 22 seasons since the renovated Yankee Stadium opened that the team has drawn over 2 million.
