Radicals Issue Threats To Thwart Olympics Bid

Compiled From Wire Services

A racist Swedish group that says it objects to spending tax money on visiting foreign athletes claimed Monday it would unleash a killing spree if the 2004 Olympics Games are awarded to Stockholm.

The threat by V.S.B.S. - Swedish initials of a name translating as “We who built Sweden” - was contained in a letter sent to The Associated Press in London. Swedish police declined to immediately comment on the letter.

“We will make the 1972 Olympic tragedy in Munich look like a kindergarten tiff” if Sweden is awarded the 2004 Olympics, said the letter, which also included racial slurs and threats against blacks, Italians, Spaniards, Jews and others.

Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches died in 1972 after Palestinian gunmen broke into the Olympic village in Munich, seeking the release of 200 prisoners jailed in Israel. Five Palestinians and a policemen were also killed in the siege.

V.S.B.S. claimed last week that it planted an Aug. 8 bomb that wrecked a portion of Stockholm’s old Olympic stadium, where the games were held in 1912. Swedish police said that note probably was not written by those responsible for the blast.

Stockholm is one of five candidates for the 2004 Olympics. The others are Rome, Athens, Buenos Aires and Cape Town. The International Olympic Committee will select the winner on Sept. 5.
