Hawerchuk Hangs Up Skates

Flyers right wing Dale Hawerchuk retired from the NHL because of an arthritic left hip, ending his career with 518 goals.

Hawerchuk, the first NHL rookie to record 40 goals and 100 points, had 12 goals and 22 assists in 51 games last year, helping the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals.

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is interested in buying the NHL’s New York Islanders, according to a published report in the Newark Star-Ledger.

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired Gary Roberts from the Calgary Flames in a four-player trade.

Along with Roberts, the Hurricanes received former Spokane Chief goaltender Trevor Kidd for center Andrew Cassels and goaltending prospect Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks signed defenseman Mike Crowley to a two-year contract.

The Buffalo Sabres signed first-round draft pick center Erik Rasmussen to a three-year contract.

The Ottawa Senators re-signed defenseman Lance Pitlick to a multiyear contract.
