Heavy Hitters

It’s a battle to cut the pork, and Republicans and Democrats each have a larger-than-life standard bearer. In the ring for the Democrats is President Clinton, aka “Tubby” to late-night comedians. In the GOP corner is House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who could have posed as the Michelin man when he weighed in at 250 pounds. The pork they are trimming: their own way-over-budget waistlines. Who will win the battle of the bulge? So far, it’s a split decision. Gingrich has lost about 26 pounds since late spring. Clinton has lost 7 to 10 pounds in that time, for a total of about 16 pounds since May 1996.
