Museum’s Familyfest To Meld Crafts, History

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

Who was John Chapman and why is he famous? When did the Mayflower sail from England to the New World? Which Indian tribe welcomed the seafaring voyagers to America?

On Saturday, usher in fall with a bit of American history during FamilyFest at the Cheney Cowles Museum.

From 11 a.m to 2 p.m., children can create miniature Mayflower ships and Indian “artifacts,” taste autumn treats and create back-to-school mementos.

This week begins a new year of FamilyFest, a tradition at the museum, on the first Saturday of each month through next summer (January excepted). It’s a time of hands-on crafts and family activities to coincide with the museum’s rotating exhibitions.

FamilyFest is designed to bring alive the museum’s exhibitions for young visitors, said Judy Grollmus, spokeswoman, who added, “We also hope to teach a little history in a subtle way.”

All FamilyFest activities are included in regular admission fees.

For more information, call the museum, 456-3931.

Clothing bank

While shopping for back-to-school items, remember our community’s working poor and homeless families in need of basic clothing.

Hundreds of families are lining up each week at the YWCA’s Family Clothing Bank looking for clothing, shoes and school supplies.

There’s an urgent need for new or clean, usable clothing for girls and boys, 5 to 18 years old.

Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., at the YWCA, 829 W. Broadway.

For more information, call 326-1190, ext. 150.

Fund-raiser

If you use Heinz baby food, save those labels. The Spokane’s Children’s Miracle Network needs them as part of an ongoing fund-raiser to support children in area hospitals.

The Heinz Baby Food Co. will pay 6 cents for every label collected by Children’s Miracle Network. All proceeds will remain in the area to help purchase equipment and toys for pediatric departments of nine hospitals.

Send the labels to: Children’s Miracle Network, P.O. Box 304, Spokane, WA 99210.

For more information, call 455-4955.
