HOW THEY SCORED

First quarter

UCLA 7, WSU 0

Skip Hicks 2-yard run, Chris Sailer kick. 94 yards, four plays, 2 minutes, 21 seconds.

On the second play from scrimmage, Hicks takes Cade McNown’s handoff and finds room behind left guard Sean Gully. Hicks breaks it out to the right sideline for 92 yards before Ray Jackson finally tracks him down. Two plays later, Hicks scores behind fullback Cheyane Caldwell.

UCLA 7, WSU 3

Rian Lindell 20-yard field goal. 77 yards, 13 plays, 4:51. On second-and-10 from the WSU 37, Michael Black picks up 22 yards behind right tackle Ryan McShane and slotback Shawn Tims. The drive stalls when Kevin McKenzie drops Leaf’s 3-yard pass on the goal line.

Second quarter

UCLA 14, WSU 3

Hicks 9-yard run, Sailer kick. 18 yards, two plays, :15. UCLA takes over after WSU backup quarterback Steve Birnbaum, subbing for the injured Leaf (right ankle), is intercepted by Bruins linebacker Ramogi Huma. Hicks stretches across the goal line after fullback Caldwell seals WSU middle linebacker Todd Nelson.

UCLA 14, WSU 10

Black 17 run, Lindell kick. 70 yards, eight plays, 3:46. After getting ankle retaped, Leaf returns to lead a flawless drive, keyed by tight end Love Jefferson’s 24-yard catch-and-run. Black carries twice for 8-yard gains on the drive, taking full advantage of UCLA’s frequent blitzes. Lindell makes 35-yard PAT after Cougars are whistled for excessive celebration.

WSU 16, UCLA 14

Taylor 57-yard pass from Leaf, kick fails. 57 yards, two plays, :57. Leaf capitalizes again against the UCLA blitz, hitting Taylor in stride along left sideline. Contact between Taylor and cornerback Aaron Roques results in Roques falling near the WSU 20-yard line.

WSU 23, UCLA 14

Leaf 1-yard run, Lindell kick. 19 yards, five plays, 2:47. Cougars take over when UCLA’s fumbled center exchange is picked up by WSU defensive end Dorian Boose, who gains a few extra yards after breaking free from Hicks and discarding UCLA split end Danny Farmer with a stiff-arm.

WSU 30, UCLA 14

Taylor 29-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 22 yards, three plays, :27. Cougars take over after the 6-foot-6 Boose blocks Sailer’s punt - sending the ball into the waiting arms of teammate Rob Meier, who rumbles 38 yards to the UCLA 22. One play after a WSU lateral loses 7 yards, Leaf hits Taylor over the middle. UCLA corner Damian Allen received no safety help on the play.

Third quarter

WSU 30, UCLA 21

Hicks 2-yard run, Sailer kick. 18 yards, five plays, 2:10. Bruins take over after McKenzie fumbles kickoff return and DuVal Hicks recovers. On third-and-1 from the 9, McNown makes the first down on a keeper. Hicks scores as WSU linebacker Brandon Moore is held off.

WSU 37, UCLA 21

Chris Jackson 78-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 80 yards, three plays, 1:04. On third-and-8, Jackson turns a short pass into a highlight-reel TD, breaking away from Allen’s grasp and juking his way downfield.

WSU 37, UCLA 27

Farmer 5-yard pass from McNown, pass fails. 72 yards, 12 plays, 4:13. On fourth-and-2 from the WSU 48, McNown’s keeper nets 4 yards.

Fourth quarter

WSU 37, UCLA 34

Hicks 4-yard run, Sailer kick. 61 yards, three plays, :47. Bruins get 29-yard improvement in field position after Cougars are forced to re-punt because of their second illegal-formation penalty. On drive’s first play, McNown’s fluttering duck is fielded by McElroy for a 50-yard gain.
