Concentrates Add Sweetness To Northland’s Cranberry Juice
There’s a new name in the cranberry juice business. The brand is Northland, and if you’ve seen the company’s ads, you may be tempted to switch from your regular label.
The ads boast that Northland blends, which team cranberry juice with a variety of other fruit juices, are made with 100 percent juice with no sugar added.
That’s basically true. But what the ads don’t say is that the other juices in the blends are predominantly grape and apple juice concentrates, which are low in nutrients and high in sugar.
According to the “Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter,” the nutrition breakdowns for Northland and Ocean Spray juices essentially are the same. Market leader Ocean Spray gets its sweetening from corn syrup instead of from juice concentrates.
