Kentucky Has Purdue’s Number In Great Eight

Nazr Mohammed scored a career-high 19 points and helped limit Purdue center Brad Miller to 10 about half his average - as No. 7 Kentucky defeated sixth-ranked Purdue 89-75 Wednesday night.

It was the second consecutive season in which Kentucky (5-1) defeated Purdue in the Great Eight, an event that this year featured six of the final eight teams from last season’s NCAA tournament.

Chad Austin scored 24 points for Purdue (5-2) but had five of the Boilermakers’ 22 turnovers.

(3) North Carolina 81, Louisville 72

Shammond Williams scored 22 points and hit a key jumper in the closing minutes as the Tar Heels remained unbeaten by holding off the Cardinals (2-2) in the Great Eight tournament.

Williams had eight rebounds and six assists and Antawn Jamison added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Tar Heels (7-0).

Elton Brand scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds while the Blue Devils (7-0) threw up a relentless defense to smother the Spartans (0-4) at Durham, N.C.

Freshman Khalid El-Amin scored 29 points and the Huskies (6-1) pulled away in the second half for a victory over the Mountaineers (5-1) in the Big East opener for both teams at Storrs, Conn.

At Davidson, N.C., reserve freshman guard Robert O’Kelley scored 11 points over the final 5:37 as the Demon Deacons (6-0) rallied from a late deficit to beat the Wildcats (2-2).

(25) Princeton 63, UNC-Wilm. 50

Gabe Lewullis scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and fueled the deciding run as the Tigers (5-0) beat the Seahawks (3-3) at Princeton.
