Hecla, Coeur Stocks Show Strong Gains

A surge in silver prices put Hecla Mining Co. and Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. among the biggest percentage gainers on the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday.

Hecla shares closed at $5.38, up 16.2 percent for the day on volume of 991,800 shares.

Only TVX Gold, up 17.9 percent, and Industrie Natuzzi, up 17.5 percent, had a better day.

Coeur d’Alene Mines finished at $8.68, up 13.9 percent - fourth percentagewise for the day - on volume of 764,3000 shares.

Several other precious metals stocks were among the leaders as gold, but more particularly silver, showed some strength.

Silver closed at $5.82 on the New York Mercantile, up 43 cents.
