Sarah Green produced 24 points Saturday night as the University of Portland scored its sixth straight victory over Idaho, beating the Vandals 79-73 in a non-league game in Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
The Pilots, expected to do well in the West Coast Conference, improved to 6-2 for the season. Last year, they beat Idaho 104-74, but Portland coach Jim Sollars saw a different Vandals squad this time around.
“Idaho’s made some real strides,” said Sollars, who is in his 12th season. “They were able to execute well, (but) we were able to score at a pretty high percentage.”
Idaho’s coach, Julie Holt, wasn’t as impressed.
“I don’t think we played hard like we usually do,” she said. “That’s never going to happen again. People are going to make mistakes, but you can control your attitude and how to play the game.”
Portland, which had many easy scoring opportunities near the basket, made 55 percent of its field-goal attempts.
Green made 11 of her 15 shots and her older sister, Kim, chipped in with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Greens and the other member of the front line, Kristin Hepton, from Spokane’s Central Valley High School, combined to shoot 20 for 31.
Idaho, which trailed 64-54 with 5:36 left in the game, cut Portland’s lead to five points on a Susan Woolf free throw with 1:08 on the clock. However, Kim Green answered with a layup and two free throws to seal the victory.
Reserve guard Melisa McDaniel scored 17 points, one short of her career high, to lead Idaho.
