Scientists Find Rib At Kennewick Man Site
Scientists studying the river bank site where prehistoric remains were found said Monday they have discovered a rib bone that may belong to the skeleton known as Kennewick Man.
Tests were planned to determine the age and origin of the bone, which was discovered over the weekend along the Columbia River, scientists said.
Geological studies of the site also have uncovered a layer of volcanic ash in the soil that could help confirm the accuracy of initial carbon dating that placed the age of the skeleton at about 9,200 years.
Scientists, who began examining the site on Saturday, also hope to find organic material or mineral deposits that could yield clues about Kennewick Man’s origins. The work is expected to continue through this week.
