Soccer Players Earn Ccs Monthly Honors

From Staff Reports

Soccer players claimed athlete of the month honors at Community Colleges of Spokane for December.

Heidi Simmons, a two-year captain, was selected for the women, while Paul Johnson, voted team MVP by his teammates, is the men’s choice. Both are sophomores.

Simmons, who will continue her career at the University of Montana, is a two-time all-league performer. A defender as a freshman, she played more of an attacking role as a sophomore and was selected MVP on the NWAACC Eastern Region all-star team.

Johnson, an attacking midfielder, had 21 goals and 17 assists this season. He also is a two-time all-league choice.

“During her two years at CCS, Heidi has demonstrated exceptional skills and natural leadership ability,” Sasquatch coach Cor van der Meer said.

Of Johnson, he said: “Paul’s greatest asset as a soccer player is his vision.”

College scene

Mandy Flores of Spokane (Rogers High School), a sophomore at Pacific Lutheran, set a school volleyball record for service aces this season.

Flores, a defensive specialist, who uses the jump serve, had 77 aces, eclipsing the old mark of 74 set in 1988.

The Vassar College men’s volleyball team is counting on junior Eamon Twohig of Spokane (Lewis and Clark) to take over the setting chores for the Brewers, nationally ranked in NCAA Division III last year.

The school’s preview calls Twohig “a defensive whiz and fiery competitor,” who, it says, “has all the tools to be the next great Vassar setter, and much of the team’s success will lie with him.”

Mark Lupton of Spokane (Mead), a defender on the Whitworth College men’s soccer team, was one of only two freshmen named to the All-Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges first team.

SUNY College of Brockport named senior cornerback Jeremi Bauer of Spokane (Shadle Park) the outstanding athlete on its football team.

Bauer, who moved to the secondary for his final season after three years at wide receiver, earned second-team all-league and All-East honors. He also was named the school’s special teams player of the year.

Liz Sadler of Spokane (St. George’s), a junior defensive specialist, has two points and an assist in five games as a guard on the Hamilton College women’s basketball team in Clinton, N.Y.

Neala Kendall of Pullman, a freshman on the Kenyon College women’s swimming team in Gambier, Ohio, has posted an NCAA Division III qualifying time in the 1,650 freestyle (17:32.08).

Football

Tammy Addington, 15, a sophomore at St. Maries (Idaho) High School, finished third in the AFC portion of the national Punt, Pass and Kick competition in the 14-15 age group. She will travel to Kansas City to compete in the finals Sunday at halftime of the Chiefs playoff game.

Running

June Machala, 66, of Spokane, was voted runner of the year in the 65- to 69-year-old age group at the U.S. Track and Field convention in Dallas for the second straight year.

Miscellany

Tami Moore has replaced Lauric Turner as director of academic support services for the University of Idaho athletic department.

Moore was assistant athletic director for academics and compliance at Northeastern Illinois since September. Prior to that, she was an academic counselor at Austin Peay and an assistant academic adviser at Oklahoma State, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
