Snowboarder Pogue Lands First Cup Win

Associated Press

Snowboarder Anton Pogue, a Sandpoint High graduate, overcame a steady snowfall Friday to post his first World Cup win in a slalom at Mont Ste. Anne Ski Area.

Pogue, of Hood River, Ore., had the best first run and the second-best second run. His final time of 1 minute, 26.72 seconds was 1.61 seconds ahead of runner-up Dieter Moherndl of Germany.

“I just took off and was flying down that hill,” Pogue said. “At one point, I had to put the brakes on because it was so tight at the bottom.”

Pogue, who captured the bronze medal in slalom in the snowboard World Championships last week at San Candido, Italy, said his face became frostbitten in the sub-zero cold of midweek. But the 10-degree temperature Friday “was fine, nice and comfortable.”

Marion Posch of Italy won the women’s slalom in 1:34.56.
