Bloody Tot Walks Half Mile To Save Mom Hurt In Crash

Associated Press

A 4-year-old boy bloodied in a car accident crawled out of the wreckage and walked more than half a mile to get help, thinking mistakenly his mother was dead.

Dalton Campbell showed up at the home of Angela Jackson.

“His whole face was covered with blood, and all you could see were his two little eyes,” said Jackson.

She said she’ll never forget what Dalton said when he arrived: “Our car crashed and my mommy’s dead.”

Actually, Teresa Sizemore survived the Saturday morning crash and was in serious condition Sunday.

Dalton got about two dozen stitches for a head cut and was released. He apparently had crawled out through the shattered rear window of his mother’s overturned car.

The 27-year-old mother was found underneath the trunk of the car.

Capt. Robert Hickman of the Monticello Fire Department said Sizemore’s car had slid off an icy road, struck a telephone junction box and a mailbox and then rolled over.

Hickman said Dalton’s actions were remarkable.

“It took a lot of courage,” he said. “It was barely light. His mom was unconscious,” and instead of lying there crying, “he gets out and walks … to find help for his mom.”
