Diamond Parking Holds On To Contract Despite Complaints, Council Renews Enforcement Deal

Diamond Parking’s contract to enforce the city’s downtown parking regulations was renewed by the City Council Tuesday evening by a vote of 3-1.

Councilman Chris Copstead was the lone dissenter to renew the contract for the firm. Council members Nancy Sue Wallace, Kevin Packard and Dixie Reid all voted to renew the agreement for another year.

Council members Ron Edinger and Susan Servick were absent.

Diamond Parking is unpopular because of glitches that led to some people receiving undeserved tickets or collection notices for unpaid tickets. The company blamed the problem on computer errors.

There also were complaints about the fact that downtown parking regulations are enforced six days a week in the summer and five days a week in the winter, but there are no signs posted that advertise that fact.

In other action the council:

Awarded the contract for logging Tubbs Hill to Idaho Forest Industries. Logging may begin as soon as the end of this month.

Voted to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt the least restrictive standards for controlling the smallest airborne particulates.

Rejected a proposal to allow larger signs for some home-based businesses. Mayor Al Hassell provided the tie-breaking vote against the measure. Council members Wallace and Copstead also voted no.

Awarded the contract for the completion of the Honeysuckle Avenue well to Lawrence Construction for $263,397.
