Video Unlimited Closure Catches Staff By Surprise

The Video Unlimited store on East Sprague closed last Thursday.

Store owner Rory Berg said he “just shut it down” but offered no other comment. Berg owns the Entertainment Unlimited store in the Five Mile Shopping Center and two other Video Unlimited stores, one in Hillyard, another in Airway Heights.

The Valley store’s manager, Farand Gunnels, said Berg called him last Thursday afternoon and told him to lock the doors of the store at 13105 E. Sprague.

“I was totally shocked,” Gunnels said.

Business had been deteriorating since Hollywood Video opened this summer, Gunnels said. He said he knew Berg was thinking of closing the store, but he didn’t expect it to happen so suddenly.

Gunnels had to lay off three of the four employees at the Valley store. The fate of the fourth employee is still up in the air, he said. He said he will move to Entertainment Unlimited.

There is a note to customers on the front door informing them that the store has closed. Customers can still return tapes to the drop box. Gunnels is now clearing out the shelves and boxing videotapes to take the Entertainment Unlimited store.

Gunnels said the store soon would be converted into a martial arts studio.
