Car Hits Apartment, Kills Woman In Kitchen

From Staff And Wire Reports

A speeding car smashed into an apartment complex, killing an 80-year-old woman in her kitchen, Buckley police said Sunday.

The Pierce County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Leona McClellan. She was hit by flying debris and was dead on arrival at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the Saturday night accident.

A 24-year-old man from Lynnwood, who was driving the car, was taken to Harborview after the crash. He was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday with two fractured legs.

Police said the man drove his car through a parking lot, hit the guy wire on a utility pole and then slammed into the apartments. The woman was killed by flying debris, authorities said.

Alcohol and speed were involved in the accident, police said.

The area was left without power for a short time by the crash.

The apartment complex was damaged and four other families had to leave their homes, police said.
