Sonics Teammates Take Kemp’s Night Out In Stride

Associated Press

Shawn Kemp’s Seattle SuperSonics teammates said Monday they were not concerned that Kemp was drinking the night before a Feb. 2 game with the visiting Chicago Bulls.

“Even if he did something wrong, it’s none of your business,” forward Detlef Schrempf said. “What he does on his own time is his business.”

“He’s a grown man,” guard Hersey Hawkins said. “He’s entitled to go out and have a good time like anyone else. I’ve played with a lot of guys who went out before games and had good times. As long as it doesn’t affect their play, I don’t care.”

Restaurant records show Kemp was served seven drinks at The Keg Steakhouse and Bar the night before the game with the Bulls.

Restaurant employees had told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that Kemp consumed nine to 10 alcoholic drinks.

Monday’s check of restaurant records, requested by the newspaper, showed Kemp was served four single shots of Crown Royal whiskey and three Corona beers.

Dr. Barry Logan, state toxicologist, said a normal 250-pound man imbibing seven drinks over 3 hours would have a blood-alcohol reading of about .06 - below the state’s legal limit of .10 for intoxication.
