Road Project Could Begin Tuesday

From Staff And Wire Reports

Reconstruction of East Sherman Avenue may begin as early as next Tuesday, city officials say.

Norm’s Utility Contractors, which is handling the project, plans to begin tearing up the roadway between 18th and 22nd streets on Tuesday. Initial repaving is expected to be completed by March 31. Other sections of East Sherman then will be removed and replaced.

Motorists should expect delays and detours. Traffic will be rerouted to Lakeside Avenue or Front Avenue, city officials said.

Some street crossings will remain open during the reconstruction project, including Eighth, Ninth, 11th, 15th and 21st streets. Emergency vehicles will have access during the project.

For the other sections of East Sherman, the planned demolition and reconstruction schedule includes:

Between 15th and 18th streets, demolition should begin Feb. 26 and the first layer of asphalt should be in place by April 8.

Between 12th and 15th streets, the contractors should begin tearing out the old street March 17 and have the first repaving done by April 17.

From Ninth to 12th streets, the demolition will begin March 26th and the initial layer of asphalt should be completed by April 28.

Between Seventh and Ninth streets, workers should begin removing the old asphalt April 7 and have the first layer of replacement paving down by May 8.
