Blackhawks Deliver Ko To Riverside

This time, Cheney made certain it had Riverside down for good.

Anna Getz totaled 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists Friday to lead the fifth-ranked Blackhawks (15-2, 7-2) to a 63-37 Frontier League girls win over visiting Riverside (12-6, 8-2), which had won eight straight.

When the teams met Jan. 31, Cheney led 39-24 but the Rams scored the game’s final 16 points. In the rematch, Cheney jumped ahead by 10 early and started the third quarter with a 14-0 run.

Kara Weitman added five steals for Cheney.

Sherry Shollenberger hit three 3-pointers on the way to 19 points and Dawn Salfer had six steals to guide the league-leading Eagles (14-2, 9-0) over the visiting Bantams (3-12, 2-6).

In winning their 14th straight, the Eagles forced 27 turnovers and committed just 12.

Melissa Wollan’s 3-pointer with 3 minutes left snapped a 38-all tie and the Indians (6-12, 3-7) pulled away from the visiting Knights (4-13, 1-8).

Wollan added seven rebounds and Heather Brown four assists. Rebecca Triplett had 10 rebounds for EV.

Russell Legg’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in the second overtime broke a 73-all tie and sent the visiting Bantams (12-3, 5-3) over the foul-plagued Eagles (11-5, 6-3).

WV’s Sean McLachlan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force the first OT. Josh Sweet of the Eagles, who scored 20, hit a 3 at the buzzer to end the first OT. Four Eagles fouled out, three during regulation.

Ryan Monroe scored 28, including two free throws in the final minute, as the visiting Rams (6-12, 4-6) surprised the Blackhawks (11-6, 6-3).

Cheney won its initial meeting with Riverside 73-57.

Tim Sprangers hit 8 of 9 from the floor and scored 20 to guide the first-place Indians (12-6, 8-2) over the visiting Knights (1-16, 0-9). Colville shot 59 percent from the field and forced 32 turnovers while committing just six. EV lost its seventh straight and is one step away from being eliminated from the District 7-AA picture.
