Peron Courted Nazi Refugees

Compiled From Wire Services

The late President Juan Peron set up a commission in the decade after World War II to find former Nazi leaders in Europe and offer them refuge in Argentina, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The team plotted strategy and proposed candidates useful to the government, La Nacion newspaper said.

The newspaper report was based on research by a Jewish group, whose historians studied 22,000 documents, La Nacion said.

“Peron’s secret team not only welcomed fugitives but also proposed candidates for admission and then sent out missions to arrange their safe passage from Europe to South America,” the newspaper quoted researcher Beatriz Gurevich as saying.
