Salinas Ties To Drug Lords Alleged

Compiled From Wire Services

Former Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, his family and top officials in his administration met and developed relationships with powerful drug kingpins, Mexico’s investigative magazine Proceso reported Sunday.

Proceso cited U.S. Justice Department documents alleging that while he was president Salinas met with Juan Garcia Abrego, who has since been convicted and sentenced to life in U.S. courts for drug trafficking and money laundering.

The magazine also cited allegations in one of the documents that Salinas’ brother, Raul Salinas, regularly took payments from drug traffickers.

Much of the testimony in the documents came from unidentified sources, some of whom are in the U.S. witness protection program.
